Sangean 50th Anniversary Project

Sangean has been making audio equipment for over 50 years and we won a proposal to create a video celebrating their 50th anniversary. They wanted to show some of their hero products in different scenarios over the years,so it was a great chance to get cinematic. After deciding on the specific products, and the year, environment, and situation the product would be used in, we got to work finding suitable locations, actors, and props to make it look realistic. The scenarios we decided on were: (1) 1981 - An Indian college student living abroad, feeling homesick.

(2) 1991 - A Serbian family huddled around the radio, listening to news updates about the war.

(3) 1999 - A fan of Michael Jackson, dressing up like his idol and dancing on a Tokyo overpass. (4) 2005 - A heartbroken young woman, drinking wine and listening to sad songs at home.

(5) 2010 - A couple of friends relaxing by a pool in California, and the radio falls in the water.

(6) 2015 - A mother lies in bed, using peaceful music to get her young child to sleep.

(7)2020 - A man camping in the forest in a dangerous storm, listening to news updates on his radio.

(8) 2023 - Two men working in a woodshop, listening to a baseball game live on the radio.

(9) Future - A mother and daughter in a sleek futuristic home environment.

We could potentially have squeezed the 9 locations into 2 days, but we decided to spread it over 3 days instead. Taipei weather is very unpredictable in December, and it was the firsst time working with this client, so we decided to be slightly more conservative in our planning. We opted for a more stripped down camera and lighting team, and more focus on the art and actors. We used a Red Raptor with DZO anamorphic lenses, and an array of Aputure lighting and a case of Astera Titan tubes.

We tried to give each scene its own unique look, but also keep cohesiveness throughout the whole video. One of the ways we did this was through color grading. Here are few of the color palettes we used:

The view outside the house in our final scene wasn't quite futuristic enough, so we composited some future into it! Here you can see the (1) raw file (2) colorgraded file and (3) finished clip

Here are a a few screenshots from each scene:

And here is the final video ! (We also made cutdowns of each scene, and an overall 30 second version, but this is the complete version)
